Take Action: Help EPA Fight Global Warming
Tuesday, June 16th, 2009The EPA is asking for public comment on its finding that global warming pollution endangers public health and
welfare. This is your chance to urge the EPA to protect our environment and our future by regulating global warming pollution.
In April 2007, the U.S. Supreme Court soundly rejected the Bush Administration’s argument that the Clean Air Act does not apply to global warming pollution. The Court directed the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to determine whether global warming pollution endangers public health and welfare.
On April 17, 2009, the EPA issued a proposal that recognizes what the science has been telling us for years - that carbon pollution is dangerous, leading to poor air and water quality and causing severe heat-waves and wildfires, longer droughts, more intense storms, and many other serious threats to human health and the environment. In addition, EPA is proposing to find that emissions from new vehicles contribute to global warming. The EPA has done the right thing with this proposal to protect our health, our families, and our future. The science is clear: We must take action on global warming.
We need to act soon. Submit a comment today and please forward this message to 5 people you know.
Urge EPA to uphold the scientific integrity of its proposal and finalize the determination that global warming pollution is harmful to our health and welfare. Comments are due by June 23, 2009.
Bright Idea: Michigan Scientists Unite Against Global Warming
Friday, June 5th, 2009University of Michigan Professor Knute Nadelhoffer worked with scientist colleagues from colleges and universities across Michigan to speak with one voice: We need action now to fight climate change. More than 180 Michigan scientists signed the joint letter to Michigan’s congressional delegation calling for support of legislation to fight climate change. We think it is a bright idea that should be replicated in other states.

Climate Change Solutions and Clean Energy Debate Focuses on the Heartland
Monday, June 1st, 2009Important legislation is moving forward in Congress to reduce global warming pollution and increase clean renewable energy and energy efficiency, which will create new green jobs and spur economic growth. Opponents argue that capping global warming pollution will be too expensive in states that rely heavily on coal for their electricity. In a Quad Cities Times article, ELPC’s Andrew Snow explains that worries over cost increases are “… the kind of thing we’ve been hearing since automakers told us they couldn’t put in seat belts. I think the costs will be minor if not completely mitigated.”
New Federal Clean Cars Standards Will Reduce Pollution
Monday, June 1st, 2009The transportation sector is the second largest source of greenhouse gas pollution. The Obama Administration took a major step toward reducing pollution from cars and trucks last week by announcing new standards requiring that the average car get 39 mpg by 2016, and the average truck get 30 mpg. By 2016, increased fuel economy will reduce greenhouse gas pollution by 30% from vehicles sold in the U.S.
Activists in India Push for Carbon Pricing
Monday, June 1st, 2009Development in India is improving the standard of living for many of the nation’s one billion people, but it is also raising the amount of global warming pollution. A coalition of Indian activists is pushing their government to put a price on carbon pollution and make sustainable development a priority.
Paint Your Roof White!
Monday, June 1st, 2009U.S. Secretary of Energy Steven Chu suggests that buildings’ flat roofs, roads and other paved surfaces be painted white. Light surfaces can reflect about 80% of the sun’s heat, while dark surfaces reflect only 20%. According to secretary Chu, painting paved surfaces and roofs with lighter shades would cut global warming pollution by as much as taking every car in the world off the road for 11 years.

Global Warming Pollution Could Cost Midwest Corn Economy Millions
Thursday, April 23rd, 2009A new report predicts that global warming pollution will cost the Midwest and Southern corn economies about $1.4 billion annually. The report indicates that higher temperatures, a more radical weather pattern and an increase in pests will harm future corn crops, affecting not only the food crop but efforts to grow the corn ethanol industry. These findings run contrary to past claims that global warming might help some agricultural economies by lengthening growing seasons.
