Farm bill stalled in U.S. Senate
The drive to pass a comprehensive new U.S. Farm Bill stalled last week in the
Senate, victim of a dispute between Democrats and Republicans over unrelated amendments. The bill includes critical farm-based renewable energy and energy efficiency programs that could reduce greenhouse gas pollution by 57 million metric tons a year, according to a study by the Environmental Law & Policy Center. The ELPC study assumes funding of at least $1 billion a year, or $5 billion over the five-year life of the legislation, which is less than 2% of the total Farm Bill budget.
