Hybrid Car Sales Soar 38% in 2007

More than 350,000 new hybrid vehicles were registered nationwide in 2007, easily surpassing the record set only a year earlier.  While hybrids still make up only about 2% of total car sales, the 38% surge is particularly noteworthy because overall new vehicle sales slumped 3%.  Car market analysts say the sharp growth in demand for hybrids is because of not only high gas prices, but also the greater number of hybrids now available.

I am deeply concerned by these stats that you state - as the actual number of hybrids that are available at car dealers has decreased in 2008. The number that are allotted to each car dealer for the year 2008 is in the single digits. I know this for a fact - as I have been shopping for a Saturn Vue and saw the list of the available cars that are available for order. Could they be holding back to create demand?? Or scarier yet…force purchase of a dirty car to those who need to buy now? I also visited the Ford dealer to look at the Ford Escape and again found no hybrids readily available.
Another significant concern of mine is that there are no incentives to purchase these cars… actually quite the opposite - interest rates are up as well as the cost of the car.
In my opinion, this escapade has some of the same shade of the shenagans that were implemented when Detroit and big oil killed the electric car.
