Is your Computer E-PEAT?

computer_dell1.jpgJust like Energy Star rates energy efficient appliances, the EPA has compiled a similar system to evaluate and compare new computer models based on environmental considerations like reduced amounts of hazardous materials and energy efficiency.  Newer computer models and monitors are leaps and bounds more efficient than older versions, so if you are in the market for a new PC or laptop companion, make sure to use the EPA’s Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool (EPEAT) to select your new, greener model.

EPEAT ratings, which come in Bronze, Silver, and Gold, are evaluated according to 51 environmental criteria, 23 of which are mandatory and 28 being optional.

According to the EPA, by purchasing E-PEAT registered PCs and monitors over the next five years we can reduce hazardous waste by more that 4 million pounds, eliminate more than 1 million pound of non-hazardous waste, and save more than 200,000 megawats hours of energy use - enough to power 2 million homes!

If you are in the market for a new computer, make sure to find a recycling option near you.  Unfortunately, many areas are without adequate locales to take computers or other e-waste (electronic waste) items, such as TVs and cell phones for proper disposal.

Several states in the Midwest, including Illinois, Wisconsin, and Minnesota are in the process of enacting legislation to make certain all residents have options to properly recycle their e-waste.  ELPC is working in those states for e-waste recycling programs.
